Five nights of shows you cannot see anywhere else in the world!
The Shows of Beakerhead!
Five nights of shows you cannot see anywhere else in the world! Quite possibly the best in the world when it comes to art, science and engineering.
Original, quirky, delightful — and only in Calgary, the line up of ticketed shows at Beakerhead this year will jolt your expectations. Go to them all – if you want a crash course in inspiration!
Wednesday, September 14
Your chance to experience an evening like this will be once in a lifetime. A warehouse turned skate lab is the setting for a beautifully forged culinary experience. Factor in top Calgary chefs like Darren MacLean of Shokunin, Cam Dobranski at The Brasserie and Jan Hansen of Hotel Arts for starters. Add tall cocktails and even taller crane rides, and you have the making of a highly memorable evening.
Love Labs: The Darker Side of Relationships
Thursday, September 15
Science can tell us a lot about emotions, like whether revenge is really sweet. Dr. Susan Boon from the University of Calgary, and Dr. Stephen Yoshimura from the University of Montana explore revenge in this animated and scientific evening, held in one of the world’s oldest love labs – a pub! Everyone welcome, even if you don’t have revenge on your mind.
Friday, September 16
This evening of sparkling storytelling will take you to from sensory mathematics, to the core of creative teams, to tap dancing. You’ll meet the world expert on bullshit, authors like Dr. Christopher Emdin and CBC Radio’s Gill Deacon. All of the stories are brought to life with music by the Beakerband, in the new home of the National Music Centre to boot, Studio Bell. A gem.
Rock ‘n Roll History of Space Exploration
Saturday, September 17
2:00 and 7:00 pm
Love space? Love rock ‘n roll? Now you know what you are doing on Saturday! The matinee show is a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon, before heading out for dinner pre-Beakernight. The evening show gives you a chance to meet a real Canadian astronaut, Dr. Robert Thirsk. Both shows feature theramin player Clara Venice (she opened for the Violent Femmes) and Cowtown Opera! Back with rave reviews!
Wednesday, September 14 to Sunday, September 18
8:00 and 9:30 pm nightly seatings (2:00 and 8:00 pm on Sunday)
Chances are you have never watched a play in a hair-training salon. You definitely haven’t had your hair washed during the course of the show! Each performance is 45-minutes long and limited to 10 people. This remarkable and delightful experience is created by Ghost River Theatre in association with the Aveda Institute Calgary.
Beakerhead 2016 takes place from September 14-18.
